Here are my Top 10 movies of the year (meaning they opened in KC during 2013, even if they were considered for the 2011 Oscars). They are presented in no particular order. Alas, “Zero Dark Thirty” won’t open here until January. Otherwise it would definately be among the Top Ten.
PS Late addition: Holy crap, how could I forget about “SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN”? That ought to be in the Top Ten, too. I’m beginning to think this was a very good year at the movies.
THE TOP TEN:
“The Sessions”
“Life of Pi”
“Argo”
“Beasts of the Southern Wild”
“Moonrise Kingdom”
“A Separation” (Iran)
“In Darkness” (Poland)
“Undefeated” (documentary)
“Intouchables” (France)
“The Imposter” (documentary)
RUNNERS UP:
“Les Miserables”
“In the Family”
“Your Sister’s Sister”
“Once Upon a Time in Anatolia” (Turkey)
“Silver Linings Playbook”
“Jeff Who Lives at Home”
“Hunger Games”
“Bernie”
“Perks of Being a Wallflower”
“Arbitrage”

I’ve been reading your excellent reviews forever!! I am so surprised that ‘Lincoln’ didn’t even rate a runner- up for you. I did read that review…..I think you gave it two and a half stars. I liked ‘Jeff’ and ‘Sister’s Sister’ but those on the list and no ‘Lincoln’?? Humm…did you just see it once?
Keep up the good work. It was a terrific year for movies…..thanks in part of the Mossman brothers. I thought ‘Separation’ and ‘Beast’ were brilliant. Glad they are here. I do miss you in the Star.
Sincerely,
Connie Rose

Seriously, Bob, no “Lincoln?’
Thank you for not forgetting IN THE FAMILY It only played a few performances at the Tivoli and, without major distributor marketing, it had little chance of finding its audience. Your initial review of IN THE FAMILY was spot-on. It’s an intelligent, emotionally honest film that takes a morally complex plot situation and examines at it with understanding, kindness. Nuanced performances, excellent screen writing, courageous direction. IN THE FAMILY restored my hope in independent American cinema’s ability to tackle contemporary issues. Also, thank you for your initial review; it’s what got me to the Tivoli to see this hidden jewel of a film.
I didn’t think Lincoln was all that great either!!
Glad I stumbled onto your site, Bob!!
